The 15th Century Bondgate Tower - one time gateway into Alnwick - still divides Bondgate Without from Bondgate Within and until the 20th Century this was part of the main road from London to Edinburgh. The gateway is also known as Hotspur Tower after "Harry Hotspur" (1366-1403). Harry was part of the Percy dynasty that still holds the title Duke of Northumberland, Henry 'Harry Hotspur’ Percy was immortalised by Shakespeare in Henry IV. |
